Tale of Two Teams: Cheerleading
New Coaches, New Moves, New Seasons

May 11, 2007

Using new routines, the Varsity Cheerleading squad did somersaults at the State tournament. Placing 6th, the team is setting the standards high for LHS cheerleading teams to come. The team owes a lot of their success to their new coach.

Julie Thias became coach only a few weeks before the tournament, but was able to teach new moves and a new style.

"Our new coach has really helped us get prepared for State. She really knows her stuff," said Michelle Whalen (11).

Captains Lauren Haviland (12) and Shaun Scott (12) also came through big and showed the newcomers how it was done.

"The older girls really took me under their wing this season and showed me everything they knew," said Danielle Critzas (10).

Be sure to head on over to the gym this winter as they cheer on the basketball team; or mix things up and travel to the arctic to watch the hockey cheerleaders cheer on the Varsity team as they skate to victory.

The hockey cheerleading squad brings a fresh look to cheerleading. Without any returning Varsity members and a new coach, they were still able to create a few new cheers.

The team is composed of 9th and 10th graders this year. Although the team is young, they are still able to keep the audience’s attention, despite the chants of the obnoxious hockey hooligans.

"It’s pretty nerve-racking to stand up in front of everyone, but the hooligans make it a lot easier. Whenever we are about to do a cheer, they always quiet down and let us show our stuff," said Samantha Christopher (10).

Whether attending basketball or hockey games this winter, make sure to support the cheerleaders.
