Team comes up short in O.T. battle

May 11, 2007

It’s playoff time, and after having an overall record of 10-6-8, the Flyers made their statement.

They had great senior talent, and the talk has been all about the play of young freshman Danny Boyne. Being a well rounded goalie, Boyne was not affected by the pressure of his first year of high school puck, having the highest save percentage in Mid-State with .945.

"I just take it one game at a time, and my teammates have given me a lot of support throughout the season. The more shots taken on me the better because each shot builds more focus," said Boyne.

Going into the playoffs, the team had a boost of confidence after winning Districts. Having fought hard all year, all the games were close. The District consists of top teams like Oakville, Kirkwood, and Pkwy. South. Even with all of this tough competition, they prevailed, going 6-3-3 in the Conference.

Another confidence booster came with tying CBC 3-3 at the end of the season. It was an intense game with goals by Nick Jung (11), Derek Shrum (11), and Ian Rinehart (12). At one point they had a 3-0 lead, but that ended by a CBC three goal route. Despite the stress, they tied the #1 ranked team in the State.

"We were working well as a team on the ice and we had a positive attitude on the bench. What more can I say, we tied CBC," said Will Hohmeier (12), assistant captain.

The team just finished with the first round of the playoffs, losing to Lafayette in double-overtime on Mon. Although they lost, their season was memorable and it put Flyers Hockey on the map.
