Energy drinks:
Harmless fad or fright?

May 21, 2008

Spotted: a student rushing to first hour, juggling books, binders and folders while sipping an energy drink. These carbonated, sweet beverages seem to have become the fuel for most teenagers. With up to 220 calories per can, energy drinks can become an unhealthy habit. Energy drinks are chock-full of caffeine, but also have an appetizing taste, unlike coffee that one must acquire a taste for. Because of this, many teens have opted for an energy drink in the morning rather than a cup of coffee.

"They’re delicious and refreshing," says Collin Luebbert (10).

The arising problem with energy drinks is that some fail to limit themselves to one per day, which is suggested. According to BBC News, France, Norway, Uruguay and Iceland have even gone as far as banning the popular drink Red Bull. The main concern is the level of caffeine in the famed drinks. For adults, 300 milligrams of caffeine per day is safe, and with the size of the trademark bullet shaped can growing, if one overindulges, consequences could be harmful.

"Energy drinks are tasty, but I only drink them every once in a while," says Cole Murdock (9).

While most energy drinks are sugar-filled, healthier alternatives are becoming more popular. Enviga by Nestea is made with carbonated green tea that is rich in antioxidants. Vitamin Water, Sobe and Nutrisoda also offer flavors that energize healthily.

Marketing of the beverage is the source of popularity. Teens easily succumb to flashy names like Monster, Rockstar, Amp and celebrity endorsements.Cans decorated with metallic colors and simple logos are quickly identified when searching for something to quench one’s thirst.

Overall, energy drinks are a fun treat from time to time, but best in moderation. Teens should be wary of jumping on the energy bandwagon, with the possibility of developing what some call an "addiction".
