Month of ‘music in our schools’
Opportunity brought to all music programs

March brought great opportunity to all three music departments with two major competitions: Large Ensemble and Solo and Small Ensemble.

Both competitions gave students an opportunity to perform in front of judges and receive a rating of one to five, with one being the best. Student soloists, or small groups, competed in Solo and Ensemble. Both Choir and Orchestra performed in Large Ensemble.

BAND

Band performances this month included of a Jazz Lab performance at the Mac Fest Mar. 15, and a Symphonic and Concert band performance last Monday. Bands did not participate in Large Ensemble due to snow days.

CHOIR

Women’s Choir and A Capella both represented the choir department at Large Ensemble, Wed, Mar. 12. A Capella received a two rating, and Women’s Choir received a one.

A Capella performed Musick’s Empire, from the Triptych by Lloyd Pfautsch, and Lamentations of Jeramiah by Z. Randall Stroope. Women’s Choir performed River of Sleeps by Mary Lynn Lightfoot and Lake Isle of Innesessfree by Eleanor Daley.

In addition to competitions, all choirs performed Mar. 6, and Madrigal Swingers Show Choir performed at the Viking Hotel Mar. 15.

ORCHESTRA

Both Symphonic and Chamber Orchestra performed at their annual Night of Orchestra concert Mar. 10.

At Large Ensemble, Symphonic Orchestra performed Psalm and Fugue by Alan Hovhaness  and  Serenade by Tchaikovsky. Chamber Orchestra performed Baltic Dance by Kirt Mosier and Faraway Place by William Hofeldt. Both orchestras received one ratings.

“This is the first time in the history of the LHS String Program that the LHS Chamber Orchestra received a one rating at state music festival,” said Angela Dunsford, Chamber Orchestra director.
