Campus club endorses societal awareness

Apr 10, 2008

"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world" -Anne Frank

National Honors Society (NHS) demonstrates how one person can make a huge difference.

These juniors and seniors meet once a month to discuss upcoming volunteer opportunities and organize events of their own to earn hours necessary for graduation tassels.

Pelan Le (12), aided by NHS, exposed campus diversity 7th hour Mon. March 10, with an optional Culture Day assembly.

"Holding it during 7th hour was a good idea because the performers made it on time and had time to prepare. I like that it was optional. Some people are ignorant when it comes to other cultures and a negative attitude takes away from the atmosphere," said Le.

Events included a traditional lion dance, contemporary dancing to Indian music, reggae music with InLaw, a rhythm/dance performance with Step In Time, and a martial arts demonstration.

Le said he would have liked to have represented a larger array of cultures.

Another NHS project is Recycle Committee, organized by Vidhi Srivastava (12).

"We collect and sort aluminum cans and plastic bottles, take them to the recycling center, and organize recycling efforts for the Restavec Rescue Benefit Concert, school dances, and Spirit Festival. It’s the first step to preventing future global problems. We are working on initiating single-stream recycling for next year, so we do not have to sort the cans and bottles, and we are working on trying to get more bins so that we may have one in each hallway and possibly in all the district schools," said Srivastava.

NHS volunteers helped out 12-5 pm last Sat. March 15, when Ronnie’s 20 Cine hosted Missouri Child Identification Program (MOCHIP), a non-profit service organization for families to compile information onto a single non-hackable computer file and disk.

Kevin Kaiser (12) gathered 11 volunteers to aid in this effort.

"I volunteered on a MOCHIP event with my youth group at church and had fun, so I thought it might be a good idea to have NHS help as well. We helped make information packets for about 125 kids in 5 hours," said Kaiser.

Susan Hill, NHS faculty sponsor, urges seniors to complete their hours by the end of April.

Community service is a thriving necessity in America. NHS offers an opportunity to explore this rewarding experience.
