New graduation requirements for the Class of ‘10 is an adjustment from the previous years:
Four
units of English, three units of science, social science, and math are
some of the requirements that are higher for the Class of ‘10. Also,
seven units of electives, plus an extra Health Class, and a Personal
Financial Management course have been added.
"I think it’s fair because you have to start somewhere; it’s not that much of a difference," said
Kaitlin Consolino (9). Many different states are looking at an increase of work from the students after they leave high school.
"It’s only a one credit difference," said
Bria Williams (9).
Recently national studies have shown that students with just a certain
number of credits weren’t ready for college. The ACT played a huge role
in the changed requirements. Statistics show that if the score showed
less than 18, than one wouldn’t be successful in college .
"I don’t think it’s a good idea to higher the requirements because the classes before them didn’t have to go through it," said
Brittany Rice (12).
Julie Mayor,
9th grade counselor, said she believes that its not only requirements
that need to be accomplished, but it also deals with health issues and
personal financial management budgeting.
"This is getting the students prepared for college; it’s a great idea," said Mayor.
