Patriot’s Day, Sept 11, 2007, kicked off a District wide community service commitment. Students and faculty are challenged to work with service organizations through Thanksgiving Day, Nov 22.
Since 1949, the district has raised money for charitable fundraisers, and support groups such as; Jump Rope for Heart- American Heart Assocation, Support our Troops, and the American Red Cross.
The district has assisted organizations close to home and those far away. In a little over 24 hours, $22,000 was donated to victims from Hurricane Katrina two years ago.
Dr. James Sandfort, District Superintendent, proposed a goal for all staff and student to be involved with community service, and volunteer five to 10 hours.
In an open letter, Sandfort stated, “If everyone contributes five to ten hours, the school together can meet up to 50,000 hours.”
No specific events or activities are recommended, and no money is being expected. Wherever help is needed is where “a heart to serve—hands to help” can take action, it’s all about giving back.
“[I hope it will] create an atmosphere where we’re not so focused on high school drama, and we look outside the walls to the bigger picture.” said Elizabeth Cole, senior counselor.
There are numerous ways to do service hours, from working at food and homeless shelters, church volunteering, tutoring, recycling, or even donating old clothes.
On the Lindbergh School District website, the total number of hours working are being totaled and updated frequently. The total hours, and the percent of the goal worked can be seen at the following website: http://www.lindberghschools.ws/serviceproject/.
