Sandfort’s graduating with the Class of ‘08!"
This phrase has been uttered more and more by seniors as the school year begins to come to a close.
Yet, the seniors may not realize that Dr. James Sandfort, superindendent is not the only one retiring this school year. There are four teachers moving on, two retirees (including Sandfort) and one maternity leave.
Emily Collop, social studies teacher, is one of the seven teachers not returning next year, but unlike the others she is not leaving due to retirement, or other opportunities. She has just recently had a baby boy, Michael Edward on May 17. Collop will be taking a year maternity leave to take care of the new addition to her family and see her 5 year old daughter, Isabelle off to kindergarten.
"Something I have gained from working at LHS is that I am very fortunate that some of my former students are now pursuing careers in geography. They found something in my class that affected the course of their life-what a super feeling," said Collop.
Yet perhaps the most common reaction teachers have to the questions of what they will miss and what they have gained is their appreciation for staff and faculty.
"The members of the social studies department are amazing individuals- wise, creative, funny and great educators. I am fortunate to call them friends," said Collop.
Cara Hiriptiyage, English teacher, is moving on to become the Asst. Principal at Pattonville High School also had fond words for her Lindbergh Community.
"My time here has helped me grow as an educator. I came here straight out of college. My experience with the students here has helped me grow as a person and understand people. There’s a really great staff here and are models when it comes to working with students. They are wonderful people to turn to with questions," said Hiripityage.
Other teachers moving on from the green and gold striped walls are Marco Mariscal, German, Brian Archibald, Math, and Kelly O’Conner, English.
Another retiree, Judy Mutchler, art department chair, has been with the Lindbergh family for over 30 years. Her "goodbye" party was held on Mon. May 5 in the library.
Obviously the retirement of Dr. Sandfort weighs heavy on the minds of the Lindbergh community.
Sandfort has been the superintendant in the district for 17 years. Sandfort’s area-wide "goodbye" party was held Sun. April 20 at Royal Orleans Banquet Hall. Sandfort’s district-wide "goodbye" was held Tues. May 13 in the lobby of the auditorium.
For many students, seniors especially, who have had Sandfort as their superindentant for the entire duration of their educational career, find his leaving somewhat saddening.
"Always strive to do your personal best and always be kind," said Sandfort.
For all those leaving or retiring, their lasting legacy will be missed and appreciatted by the community.
