The Good and The Bad

s the school year comes to an end, there is an increasing desire to reminise. Some events come to mind, but most commonly it is hard for someone to think of everything that happens.

Though there were rough spots in the year, it is good to fall back on swell times.

•Mizzou Football gets to #1 in the nation- With quarterback Chase Daniels and Jeremy Macklin, the team defeated every team except the Oklahoma Sooners, who the tigers lost to in final week six, knocking them out of any of the top four bowl games. Regardless, the team’s season was a big success and they were number one for one week.

•Giants defeat the undefeated Patriots in Superbowl XLII- Superbowl XLII was played between the 14-2 Giants and the 16-0 Patriots. The Patriots were the favorites, yet the Giants pulled off an amazing upset in winning 17-14. The game was the second most watched program ever behind the final M.A.S.H. episode

Soulja Boy takes over nation- Myspace hit artist Soulja Boy signs with Collipark records and is a success. Songs such as "Crank Dat (Soulja Boy)", "Soulja Girl", and "YAHHH!" were huge hits.

•134 Kentucky Derby- The horse with the best odds of winning, Big Brown, wins the annual event that has been going on since 1875. The attendance to the derby was the second largest ever.

•iPhone and new versions of iPods came out- The iPhone came out in June, and new iPods such as the video nano and the touch come out in September.

Superbad and Juno are hits- Huge box office movie Superbad is talked about throughout the school. In the winter, Superbad lead actor, Michael Cera, stars in Juno, another box office hit.

I Love New York 2, A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila and The Office- were all hit TV shows. I Love New York 2 and A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila were aired on MTV and VH1 respectively and The Office is a fictional comedy show on NBC starring Steve Carell from 40 Year Old Virgin.

•Halo III video game nets $170 million on its first day- This set the all-time record for most revenue earned in a single day by any entertainment product.

•Celebrity Paris Hilton is able to quiet her reputation- After her jail sentence in June and probation before it, Hilton seemed to quiet down for the fist time in several years.

•Kansas Jayhawks win the NCAA basketball tournament- Mario Chalmers hits a three pointer with a few second left to tie the game and send it to overtime. The Jayhawks finished the Memphis Tigers off with a 75-68 win. It was the first time in many years that all four number one seeded teams made it to the final four.

•Flyer’s first basketball number is retired- On Jan. 15, Lindbergh basketball legend, George Faerber, number 54 had his jersey retired. The jersey hangs in Gym 3.

Nintendo Wii produces huge sales- As of March, the Wii is known to have sold 24.45 million units. The unit is sold worldwide, except for in China. The game is popular for active gaming, and it includes weight loss games that can actually help gamers. There have also been reports of injuries due to it, such as ones to the wrist.

Lindbergh wins district of character award- The district is named the top character educations school in the nation.

 

long with good news comes bad news. The loses, devastations and upsets of the year are all compiled in this list:

•LHS loses a student and friend, Dan Stark (11)- Dan was fighting against brain cancer for several years, and passed away on Nov. 4. He was an inspiration to many students, and it was a huge loss to the entire district.

•Writers from many shows go on strike- The strike went on for three months. Shows such as The Office, SNL, and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno were all forced to run re-runs for the three months that the strike went on.

•Kentucky derby horse Eight Belles is euthanized on the track- She broke both of her front ankles and horses virtually cannot survive with broken leg parts, so she was put out of her misery instantly.

•Rams trade wide receiver Isaac Bruce. Cardinals lose Jim Edmonds, David Eckstein, Scott Rolen, So Taguchi and Walt Jocketty- Isaac was traded to the San Francisco 49er’s. He played for the Rams for 14 seasons, one of which was for the Los Angeles Rams. Edmonds, Eckstein, and Rolen were fan favorites. Rolen was known for his arm and bat, Edmonds for his long blasts and diving catches, and Eckstein for hardly ever striking out and winning the World Series MVP in 2006. Taguchi was a solid player that many took a liking to and Jocketty was with the Cards for 13 seasons and was one of the best general managers in the league.

•Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears have major meltdowns- Lindsay goes to jail after a D.U.I. arrest. Spears fails at her attempt to a career comeback at the MTV Video Music Awards and also looses custody of her kids.

•Pep rallies at LHS have virtually come to a stop- After having only one pep rally during school this year, teams and groups failed to get much recognition from fellow classmates.

•Floods, earthquakes and heavy snows hit St. Louis- Heavy flooding of the Meremac River this spring, and the April 18 earthquake that measured a 5.2 on the Richter Scale shook the area.

•The Cardinals, Blues and Rams miss the playoffs- After winning the World Series the previous year, the Birds fail to even make it to the playoffs with a 78-84 record in their second season in the new Busch Stadium. The Rams ended the season with a 3-13 record, and were with Miami heading into week 10 as the only teams without a win in their seasons. The Blues fail to make the playoffs yet again. Though backed by an all-star goalie, Manny Legace, and many veterans, the team couldn’t make the playoffs and haven’t since before the players strike in the 2004-05 season.

•Dr. Sandfort retires- After 17 years as the school’s superintendent, Sandfort has decided it is his time to walk away. The school was blessed to have the same superintendent for so long, especially a man of his stature.

•Gas prices get to 125 dollars a barrel- This sets an all time record, as gas will rise over four dollars this summer.

Keith Ledger dies after movie shooting- Ledger was the Joker in the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight, that is coming out this summer. Ledger died due to a sleeping pill overdose. Rumors say that the dark nature of his movie character effected him negatively. The movies is still scheduled for release July 18.

A plan for a new warehouse has been passed- The warehouse will be built near the multi-purpose room and softball field. It will deplete the already miniscule parking lot that resides in that spot.

Movie Blunders

Movies such as Good Luck Chuck, Underdog and The Invasion fail in ratings- These movies failed to get good ratings or a sufficient amount of money while in theaters.
