The rich music scene once essential to this school is lost.

A few garage basement bands exist, but one cannot help feeling upset when recalling how it used to be with iconic bands: Big Blue Monkey, Blame Gary, and The Reactions. Battle of the Bands was a fierce, fun competition, allowing students to bask talent. Without BOB, gone five years now, little competition remains.

Current student bands, In Love and War and A Striking Resemblance, play different styles, but both end up closely resembling their influences.

In-LAW posters litter hallways and classrooms, which is great publicity. Unfortunately, that band lacks a solid set of recordings to actually hear their music.

"They rush things and just want to be a rockstar," said Andrew Gray, SSD teacher and local musician.

Gray also spoke, while naming no specific bands, of an apparent fear many young bands have to reach outside their genre.

In-LAW and A Striking Resemblance both struggle with exposure, but manage to make some respectable sounds.

A Striking Resemblance is a band of mostly seniors; Jon McLaughlin (12), Chris Marek (12) and Mike Uhle (12), with Nik Pogarcic (11) and an Oakville student. They describe themselves as metal/hardcore and are influenced by national acts: Thursday, Heavy Heavy Low Low, and Killswitch Engage.

Resemblence, most recently, performed at the Creepy Crawl Day for a Death Wish and Heavy Lies the Crown.

In-LAW takes on an entirely different music style-the self-proclaimed alternative-pop roots genre. Chris Wright (11), Nick Fratta (11), Adam Snyder (11), and David Newmann (11), juniors, are influenced by artists like Ben Kweller, Dispatch, and Weezer.

Off Broadway was the latest destination for In-LAW, where they performed March 10 with Treaty of Paris and Walk Sophie.
